Safe Work Is for Life: Our Commitment to Every Worker, Every Shift

By Pieter De Klerk, General Manager, Matrix Design Australia · 19 Oct 2026

Every October, workplaces across Australia pause for National Safe Work Month. This year’s theme from Safe Work Australia is one I keep coming back to: Safe work is for life.

It is a simple line, but it says something important. Safety is not only about getting through today’s shift without an incident. It is about every worker going home healthy, and still being healthy in ten, twenty and thirty years’ time. At Matrix Design Australia, that idea sits at the centre of everything we build and every site we support.

Why it matters

The numbers are sobering. In 2024, 188 workers in Australia lost their lives to traumatic injuries at work. In 2023–24 there were 146,700 serious workers’ compensation claims, which is more than 400 serious claims every day (Safe Work Australia).

Behind every one of those figures is a person, a family and a crew. A single serious incident can change the course of someone’s life. It also leaves a lasting mark on the people who work beside them. That is why we treat safety as the reason our business exists, not as a box to tick.

Safety where people and machines meet

Mining and heavy industry are some of the most demanding places to work. Underground, visibility can be limited and conditions change by the hour. On the surface and in plants, large mobile equipment moves around people on foot, often in tight spaces.

The greatest risks often come down to one question: does everyone know where everyone else is? When an operator cannot see a worker, or a worker cannot hear a machine approaching, the margin for error disappears. Closing that gap, between people and the machines they work alongside, is where we focus our effort.

Our commitment

At Matrix Design Australia, our technology is designed to give crews more awareness and more time to react. Proximity detection, collision avoidance and solutions like OmniPro  help operators and workers see hazards sooner, so they can make safer decisions in the moment.

Technology alone is never the whole answer, though. What matters is how well it fits the way a site actually works. That is why we work side by side with our customers, from planning and installation through training and ongoing support.

Our commitment is straightforward. We will keep listening to the people who use our systems every day, keep improving what we build, and keep safety ahead of everything else.

Safety belongs to everyone

The strongest safety cultures I have seen share one trait. Everyone on site feels responsible for each other, and everyone feels confident to speak up. That includes operators, maintenance crews, contractors, supervisors and leadership.

The question “is there a safer way to do this?” should always be welcome. As leaders, our job is to make it easy to ask, to listen when it is asked, and to act on the answer. Within our own team, we hold ourselves to the same standard we help our customers reach.

Beyond October

National Safe Work Month is a valuable reminder, but safety cannot be something we focus on for one month a year. It has to be part of how work gets done every shift, on every site, in every season.

To the crews, safety professionals and partners across Australia who make that happen every day, thank you. Your care for each other is what safe work is for life really looks like.
